Head Start is a United States Department of Health and Human Services program that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and families. It is the oldest and largest program of its kind.

Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based program for low-income families with pregnant women, infants, and toddlers up to age 3.

Home Visitors complete a 90-minute home visit with you and your child weekly. They focus on activities designed specifically for your child. Bi-monthly socializations are held at our Kent and Ravenna Centers, where parents and children can participate in group activities and interact with peers.

For more information, contact our office at 330 297-7795 Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. Income guidelines apply.

Important Announcement regarding SNAP

SNAP, head start eligibility, early head start eligibility

Effective immediately, the recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are included when determining Head Start eligibility. This policy change allows Head Start programs to reach families better, minimize the burden on families seeking public assistance, and coordinate benefit programs so that families eligible for one program can more easily participate in other services for which they qualify. Adding SNAP to the categorical eligibility interpretation is essential in addressing any barriers to equitable access to Head Start services for children and families.

Please consider enrolling your child in our 2022-23 program!

If you have any further questions about SNAP eligibility, please call our main office at 330-297-7795.

COVID-19 School News

COVID-19, Portage Learning Centers

As you may be aware, the COVID-19 mutation known as the Delta variant is spreading rapidly throughout the United States. Positive COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout Ohio, including Portage County. With low vaccination rates in our community accompanied by children ages 11 and younger not yet able to be vaccinated, we will follow CDC and OOH guidance regarding the use of face masks.

Effective Monday, 8/9/21, all PLC staff, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a  mask while in the presence of children. Additionally, any parent or visitor who enters a center while children are present must wear a mask.

Staff and visitors may remove their masks at the following times:

  • While outdoors but must put it on if direct care is being provided, for example, administering first aid, comforting, or holding a child
  • When all children have left the building
  • While in an area where children are not present

PLC will continue to monitor COVID-19 trends and re-evaluate our policies monthly. If you have any questions, you may contact our PLC Nurse, Jenn Justus, at 330- 297-7795.
