OBJECTIVE

Our curriculum is aligned with Ohio’s Early Learning and Development Standards and is designed to meet the needs of each child. Every child receives a variety of learning experiences to foster their intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth. These include:

• The knowledge needed to enter kindergarten ready for success
• The skills to express feelings, develop self-confidence, and work well with others
• The desire to experience a lifetime of learning

The objective of the Education and Early Childhood Development is to provide all children with a safe, nurturing, engaging, enjoyable, and secure learning environment, in order to help them gain the awareness, skills and confidence necessary to succeed in their present environment, and to deal with later responsibilities in school and in life.

Each child is treated as an individual in an inclusive community that values, respects, and responds to diversity. The varied experiences provided by the program support the continuum of children’s growth and development, which includes the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of each child.

Curriculum

Portage Learning Centers utilizes the Creative Curriculum. The curriculum goals integrate subject areas in order to make learning meaningful and fun. Creative Curriculum facilitates the development of the whole child and is flexible enough to individualize tto the needs of each child. The curriculum address development in eight learning domains which include:

  • Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Creative Arts
  • Social/Emotional
  • Approaches to Learning
  • Physical Health


  • The curriculum supports a child’s day and includes circle/greeting time, child initiated centers and small group activities, planning/recall, focus activities, outside activities/large motor time and large group activities.

    The Creative Curriculum uses a monthly theme with each week in the month using a unit approach for skill development.
