About Head Start
Head Start is a comprehensive, no cost preschool program for children 3-5 years of age (not kindergarten eligible). Applicants must be Portage County residents and meet certain income guidelines to be eligible.
Our mission at Head Start is to provide you and your child with the best possible preschool experience. Each classroom is licensed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and staffed with a teacher and teacher’s aide.
Head Start offers two program options, Center-Based and Home-Based.
Center-Based programs operate on the idea that children learn by doing. Our classrooms are full of educational materials. Arts and crafts are planned daily and fun field trips are also included.
The Home-Based program is similar to a home schooling program where the parents are the primary educators. A Home Visitor works with you and your child weekly for one and a half hours. Your Home Visitor will provide you with creative ideas on how to expand your child’s learning at home. The Home Visitor provides you with some materials, but shows you how to teach with items you can find in your own home.
The Home-Based option is designed to serve children who live in areas far from center locations or when a child would benefit more from an individualized approach.
Head Start classes are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and last for 3 1/2 hours. For the 2013-2014 school year, the Head Start program will begin on September 9, 2013 and end early May, 2014.
More important dates for the upcoming school year will be posted soon.
