Volunteering Opportunities

Portage Learning Centers are always in need of volunteers to assist in implementing our program goals. The benefits from sharing time with others not only makes the individual feel as though they are making a difference in the lives of others, but it also provides positive feelings from those who are working with the volunteer.

Portage Learning Centers always have opportunities available in our centers as well as in our main office. Listed below are just a few of the opportunities we currently have available. For a complete list, please contact us.

• Classroom Assistant

Assist in implementing developmentally appropriate activities for children
Assist in implementing lesson plans and special classroom activities for families to attend
Provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all children

• Clerical/Office Assistant

Perform clerical duties as needed, such as word processing, photocopying, document filing, and answering and forwarding telephone calls to appropriate personnel or department. Office assistants may also welcome on-site visitors, announce visitors to appropriate personnel, and monitor visitor access, as well as work on special assignments or other tasks as directed.

• Student Teacher

Work closely with Teacher and Assistant to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities for children
Develop and implement lesson plans
Monitor appropriate behavior and attitude for the children at all times
Assist in documentation of individual student’s progress
Other duties as specified by the individual University or College

• Social Service Intern

Assist with the recruitment of the center based and home based children
Assist with planning and conducting parent committee meetings
Maintain accurate, complete records and files as required
Assist parents of young children in advocating and decision makeing for their families
Other duties as specified by the individual University or College

• Community Helper

Visit the centers in order to present information to the children as a fun learning activity
Participate in the classroom activity for the day
Demonstrate knowledge about a subject that is appropriate for children in the Head Start program
